Nigerian initiative bags Africa education award

Mthulisi Sibanda 09:05 02/07/2015 Johannesburg - Spell Africa Initiative, the globally-acclaimed Nigerian project, has emerged among the biggest winners at the inaugural African Education Week (EduWeek) Awards held in South Africa.
At the awards dinner held at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand, SpellAfrica won the Community Project of the Year accolade for its contribution in the upliftment of education standards in the country.
According to a citation by the judging panel, the mobile development initiative supported all the criteria used to award the winner.
“Its community impact is beginning to reach international levels,” said the panel.

According to the judges, the award was presented to an educational establishment or individual who could demonstrate real value to the community it served through the most imaginative attempt to aid the wider community socially, culturally or economically.
SpellAfrica won the accolade ahead of three contestants from South Africa.
The mobile for development initiative has developed an application which uses photos or images to inculcate English vocabulary in the minds and hearts of the users.
It has previously won accolades such as Global Innovation Award 2014 LEAP Africa Innovation Award 2014 and a Special Consultative Status with United Nations Economic and Social Council for its mission “To improve the poor standard of English across Africa via mobile learning.”
