Day of extremist violence across Nigeria kills more than 60

JOS, Nigeria — A day of terrorist violence against Muslims and Christians in Nigeria killed more than 60 people, including worshipers in a mosque who came to hear a cleric known for preaching peaceful coexistence of all faiths.
Terrorists from Boko Haram were blamed for the bombings Sunday night at a crowded mosque and a posh Muslim restaurant in the central city of Jos, a suicide bombing earlier at an evangelical Christian church in the northeastern city of Potiskum and attacks in several northeastern villages where dozens of churches and about 300 homes were torched.
President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attacks and said the government will defend Nigerians' right to worship freely.
It was the latest spasm of violence by Boko Haram terrorists who have killed about 300 people over the past week — apparently after an order by the self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorist group for more mayhem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Earlier this year, Boko Haram became an affiliate of the Islamic State.
The deadliest attack came Wednesday, when more than 140 people were killed — mostly men and boys mowed down by gunfire as they prayed in mosques in the northeastern town of Kukawa.
Burials were held Monday for 51 people killed by the two bombings a day earlier in Jos, said Muslim community lawyer Ahmed Garba.
An additional 67 people were wounded, according to Abdussalam Mohammed, the National Emergency Management Agency coordinator.
The explosion at the Yantaya Mosque came as cleric Sani Yahaya was addressing the worshipers, survivors said. Yahaya is the national chairman of the Jama'atu Izalatul Bidia organization, which preaches that all religions should coexist peacefully.
Garba said gunmen also opened fire on the mosque from three directions.
Survivor Danladi Sani said he saw a man dressed in white take aim at Yahaya then blow himself up. Yahaya was unharmed, Sani added.
"He is a great Islamic scholar who has spoken out against Boko Haram, and that is why we believe he was the target," Sani said.
Another bomb exploded at Shagalinku, a restaurant often patronized by state governors and other top politicians for its specialties popular with Muslims, witnesses said.
Sabi'u Bako was picking up a takeout meal when he heard a massive explosion as he walked away with friends.
"The restaurant was destroyed, and we saw many people covered in blood," he said. "We can't believe that we escaped."
Jos is a hotspot for violent religious confrontations because it is located in the center of the country where Nigeria's majority Muslim north meets the mainly Christian south. The city has been targeted by bombs claimed by Boko Haram terrorists that have killed hundreds.
Earlier Sunday, a female suicide bomber struck a crowded service of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Potiskum, killing six people, witnesses said.
Elsewhere in the northeast, terrorists killed nine people and burned down 32 churches and about 300 homes in several villages, said Stephen Apagu, chairman of a self-defense group in Borno state's Askira-Uba local government area. He said the militia killed three terrorists.
The villages had been attacked three days earlier. Twenty-nine people were killed.
The United States condemned the recent attacks and said it continues to provide counterterrorism assistance to Nigeria to "combat the threat posed by Boko Haram," said a statement Monday from State Department spokesman John Kirby.
Boko Haram took over a large swath of northeastern Nigeria last year. A multinational force from Nigeria and its neighbors forced the terrorists out of many towns, but bombings and village attacks have increased in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Nigeria's military freed 180 detainees who had been held for up to two years, accused of being Boko Haram members. Those freed Monday included women with babies and toddlers.

Kim Kardashian Naked Photo Update: KK Livid, Threatens Suit Against X17 For Helicopter Shots

Kim Kardashian Photo

It seems like Kim Kardashian is always embroiled in a nude photos scandal. The latest update on the Keeping Up With the Kardashian star is her threatened legal action against an agency that is allegedly hawking naked pictures of Kim -- at her home -- for crying out loud.

TMZ claims it has information from insiders that say Kim is on a war path against
X17, an L.A. paparazzi agency in the business of obtaining hot and in-demand celebrity pictures. Obviously, pics of celebs in compromising positions and in various stages of undress are more newsworthy.

The latest update from unnamed sources says Kim Kardashian's attorneys sent a letter to the photo agency demanding it stop the distribution or posting of any images suggestive of as Kim fully or partly naked.

Apparently, photographers hovered over Kim's Hidden Hills estate in California. There, they allegedly snapped Kardashian sunbathing in the nude. However, Kim's legal team is crying foul on a several fronts: the mom of two was not nude; she was wearing a blue bikini, and when she saw the chopper over her home, she quickly grabbed a towel.

Attorney, Marty Singer, warned the agency that if it sells the alleged naked photos of Kim Kardashian, they face a legal battle in civil court and big damages should they prevail.

In wake of the legal threats, the website appears to have taken down the purported naked photos of Kim Kardashian. The moral of this story: If KK wants to show the world her unveiled assets, just let her husband do it (check out the video below; you'll understand).

A computer overload prompted the spacecraft to partially shut down on July 4th - just days
before the first-ever close flyby of Pluto. Flight controllers managed to regain contact with the spacecraft in just over an hour and correct the tense situation, occurring after a relatively quiet journey of 5 billion kilometres and 9 1/2 years.

World Leaders Await Outcome of Key Summit on Greece Crisis

Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, right, signs a protocol as the new Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos, left, looks on during the swearing in ceremony at Presidential Palace in Athens, Monday, July 6, 2015.
Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, right, signs a protocol as the new Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos, left, looks on during the swearing in ceremony at Presidential Palace in Athens, Monday, July 6, 2015.
All eyes in debt-ravaged Greece and beyond are riveted on a European Union summit set to convene Tuesday in a showdown likely to determine whether Greek banks open later this week or remain shut.

Pressure mounted Monday on Athens, as one of its key lenders, the European Central Bank, decided not to boost emergency credit to Greek banks.  Without outside help, those banks are expected to run out of cash as early as Wednesday, with Athens projected to default on billions of dollars in loan repayments to European creditors later this month.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking Monday in Paris alongside French President Francois Hollande, said the conditions for a new Greek bail-out package "have not been met." She placed the onus on Greek leaders to act quickly to strike a deal with creditors in order to stay in the eurozone.

"Time is of the essence and we insist that Greek proposals must be on the table this week, so we can deal with the situation the way it is at the moment," Merkel said.

Greek voters on Sunday overwhelmingly rejected a new round of austerity measures demanded by European creditors in return for further installments on more than $250 billion in loan guarantees since 2010.

Without a deal, analysts say the crisis could force Greece from the 19-nation euro currency bloc -- the first such departure in the eurozone's 16-year history.

Earlier Monday, in a sign seen by some analysts as conciliatory, outspoken Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis resigned, after repeated clashes with international lenders over bailout terms.  Most recently, he accused the EU leaders of "terrorism" in their push to persuade Greek voters to approve more austerity measures.

In explaining his departure, Varoufakis said he was "made aware of a certain preference" by some members of the eurozone for his "absence" from meetings of finance ministers. He also said it was "an idea the prime minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement" with Greece's creditors.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras later named lead bailout negotiator Euclid Tsakalotos as its new finance minister.

In Washington, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it is in "the collective interests" of Europe and the United States that Greece reaches a new bailout deal with its lenders, with Athens agreeing to "a package of reforms."

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew spoke Monday with Tsipras and Tsakalotos. He expressed hope all sides will be able to agree on a deal that "will allow Greece to make difficult but necessary fiscal and structural reforms, return to growth, and achieve debt sustainability within the eurozone," according to a Treasury statement.

U.S. stock prices moved down, but the declines were not as large as some analysts predicted.  Most markets around the world, including those in Europe, fell because of the financial uncertainty created by Sunday's Greek vote.

The chief of the eurozone's finance ministers, Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, said keeping Greece in the eurozone "is still their objective and mine," but he said the referendum "doesn't bring us closer to a solution right away.

"I have to say again that whatever the result of the referendum, tough measures are necessary in Greece, otherwise the country won't recover, otherwise the government won't work better, otherwise the economy won't start turning," he said. "And if the government and population reject difficult measures, then we get to a very difficult place, especially for the Greek people," said Dijsselbloem.

A leading German economist predicted a likely Greek exit from the eurozone.  "I have very little hope that [it] can be avoided," said Henrik Enderlein.  He said there is an 80 percent probability it will happen.  "This situation is extremely dangerous for the euro area."

Buhari mourns Yobe church bomb attack victims

Abuja - President Muhammadu Buhari has denounced the deadly bomb attack at a church on the outskirts of Potiskum in Yobe State on Sunday.
Five people died when a woman suicide bomber blew up.
Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, said the President received the news with sadness.
“President Buhari deeply regrets the unfortunate loss of lives in the attack and commiserates with all those who lost loved ones in the incident which also caused needless injury to others and damage to the church building,” Adesina.
Adesina said the President wholly condemned the resumption of attacks by terrorists on places of worship which were highly revered places of prayer and communion with God for most Nigerians.

“Nigerians are a very religious people and President Buhari believes that the terrorists who wantonly attack our places of worship have willfully declared war on all that we value, and must therefore be confronted with all our might and collective resolve.”

Keshi had the opportunity of leaving honourably, says Christian Chukwu

Keshi

Super Eagles’ former coach, Christian Chukwu, said yesterday that sacked coach Stephen
Keshi had the opportunity of leaving the position honourably when it became obvious that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) no longer needed his services.
Chukwu was among the many football people who advised Keshi to walk away from his position when it became obvious that he was hanging on to the position because of the influence of some people in the former President Goodluck Jonathan government.
Keshi was sacked on Saturday by the NFF, who accused the coach of “lacking the required commitment to achieve the Federation’s objectives as set out in the Coach’s employment
contract.”
According to Chukwu, who said the NFF was right in sacking Keshi, “from day one,
it was obvious the federation didn’t really want to work with Keshi and one could read it
 easily from their body language.

‘Why Buhari will be visiting U.S. this month’

Buhari and Obama
From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came at the weekend confirmation that President
Muhammadu Buhari will visit United States to meet with President Barack Obama on
July 20, 2015.
The visit is coming barely a week after the US Supreme Court legalised same sex marriage in all states of America.
Briefing the press in Abuja on Saturday, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bulus Lolo, said the President Buhari’s visit to U.S. would provide an avenue to
discuss political, economic and other issues of mutual benefit to both countries, contrary to speculations that the meeting may be used by Obama to put pressure on Buhari to reverse the
anti-gay marriage law passed by the National Assembly and assented to by former President,
Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Juan Cuadrado’s agent insists his client is set to remain at Chelsea next season despite
speculation linking the Colombian winger with a move away from Stamford Bridge
this summer.
The 27-year-old joined Chelsea in February from Fiorentina but made just four Premier
 League starts for the Blues.
Cuadrado, who has four years left on his contract, is a reported target of Italian champions
Juventus and Spanish side Valencia this summer but his agent has denied transfer speculation.
“Much to my amazement, I read in some English and Italian newspapers about imaginary
figures and agents associated with Cuadrado, so I think it is right to clarify the situation,”
Cuadrado’s agent Alessandro Lucci said to Italian website www.tuttomercatoweb.com.
“Cuadrado is a Chelsea player, who (Jose) Mourinho strongly wanted just over five months
ago and the coach truly believes in him.
“He has many admirers but I reiterate that Juan is a Chelsea player.
“I, as his agent and intermediary, will decide with Juan his future, nobody else will.”
Cuadrado, who last month competed at the Copa America in Chile with his national team, will be hoping to earn more regular playing time in his first full season with the Premier League champions.
The South American came off the bench eight times in 12 Premier League appearances and has yet to score since moving to England in a £23.3 million transfer from Italian side Fiorentina.

We Might Negotiate With Boko Haram- FG

We Might Negotiate With Boko Haram- FG

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, yesterday in an interview with BBC has said the Buhari led Government is not ruling out negotiations with boko haram sect. When asked whether it would work, Mr Adesina replied saying;

“This is going to work. There are machineries being put in place. It’s going to work. The recent killings by the sect were meant to break our resolve, to weaken it, but that will stop. It remains a priority to him (Buhari) to deal with the group.

“You will notice that his first two weeks of administration were dedicated to tackling the insurgency. He visited Chad and Niger Republics and the following week, the Presidents of those countries also visited him in Abuja. The President of Benin Republic and the Defence Minister of Cameroon visited him; machinery is being put in place and once we’re through, we will see the end of the group. The target time for the deployment of the multinational force is July ending; that is in a couple of weeks.”

When further asked if the Federal Government was actually considering negotiations, Adeshina said;

“If they are willing, why not? You know attempts have been made for negotiations in the past and they didn’t work. Every reasonable person would want to see the end to this insurgency. So if they are willing, why not? You can’t rule that out.”

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

The Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has quit, despite the country’s decisive rejection of the eurozone’s terms for the country remaining in the single currency.

Announcing his resignation in a blog post entitled “Minister No More!” he wrote: “Soon after the announcement of the referendum results, I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants [eurozone finance ministers], and assorted ‘partners’, for my … ‘absence’ from its meetings; an idea that the prime minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. The phenomenon has never before been seen in reptiles in the wild and the proportion of females is getting bigger because of the growing temperatures of their natural woodland habitat.
The cold-blooded Australian Central Bearded Dragon is able to change the sex of its embryos that start off with two Z chromosomes - making them genetically male - meaning they develop into a female as the temperature gets warmer.

DPR attributes fuel queue in Abuja to drop in supply

Abuja - The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has attributed the persistent of fuel queue in Abuja and environs to a sharp drop in the lifting of oil by marketers from Suleja Depot.
A senior officer from DPR, who preferred anonymity, revealed on Thursday in Abuja that the daily supply to Abuja started dropping since the beginning of the week.
The source said that average daily supply to Abuja was between seven million and eight million litres before "but has now dropped to between one and 2 .1 million litres on Monday and Tuesday respectively."
The source however said that the fuel supply had increased to above six million litres as at Wednesday.
The official said that shortage of supply in the neighbouring towns and states also contributed to the queues in various filling stations in Abuja.
According to the source, the case also worsens because of the regulated price being enforced in the FCT by the DPR.
The official said that because of the surveillance and monitoring by DPR in Abuja, filling stations could not engage in any sharp practices or sell above pump price to the customers.
On why the resurface of queue in Abuja, the official said some of the marketers that bring fuel to Suleja Depot "most often divert to where they can sell at higher price".
Also read: 88 trucks of petrol supplied to Abuja: DPR
The source however expressed optimistic that the situation would improve.
The official warned the marketers against hoarding or selling above pump price, stressing that whosoever was caught in the act of defrauding or cheating motorists would face the full wrath of the law.
The source said that the DPR would take decisive action against such marketers or filling station owners.
Fuel queues have remained in Abuja in spite of the supply of 188 trucks of fuel on Wednesday.
It was also observed that the queue subsided a little bit on Wednesday evening but increased on Thursday morning in most filling stations with fuel.
At the NNPC Mega Filling Station on Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Central Area, long queues of vehicles blocked the flow of traffic on the road.
The Conoil and Total filling stations opposite NNPC headquarters had long queues that encircled the Bureau of Statistics Complex.
The situation was also the same at Total, Conoil, and Mobil stations at Wuse, Garki, and some independent filling stations along Berger, Jabi Road as well as the Airport Road.
All these stations mentioned were selling at the official pump price of N87 per litre.
However, it was observed that the black market operators sold the product between N120 and N150 per litre depending on the bargaining power of the buyer.

Lagos - Most Rev. James Olusola Odedeji, the Bishop of Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, on Thursday condemned the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld same-sex marriage as a legal right, saying "it is not of God".
Odedeji criticised the court ruling while ordaining some priests and deacons at the Anglican Church of Ascension, Opebi, Lagos.
He urged the Federal Government not to have anything to do with same-sex marriage as it was not scriptural.
"I have ordained some men of God for the purpose of proclamation of the gospel; they are to go out and show lights where we have darkness.

"Whoever approves gay marriage is a man of darkness or a woman of darkness; and what we are saying is that, that is barbaric, that is not scriptural; it is not of God.
"God will not allow that to happen in this country I believe that the government of this nation will not allow that to come to stay.
"So if that one is approved somewhere else, it cannot be approved here; we disassociate (ourselves from anything that has to do) with gay marriage wherever it is being institutionalised."

Stoke grants Osaze one-year extension

Nigeria’s Stoke City striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie can heave a sigh of relief , following the Club’s reward with a new one- year contract extension.
With this extension the Nigeria international will remain at the Britannia Stadium until the end of the 2015-16 campaign but happily there is the option of a further 12 months.
Odemwingie, who joined the Potters in January 2014, recovered from a serious knee injury which sidelined him for eight months to return to action in April.
“We’re delighted to that Peter has extended his stay with us at the club until the summer of 2016,’’ said chief execu- tive Tony Scholes.
“He suffered an unfortunate injury last season after making a big impression immediately after joining the club.
“Peter has worked incredibly hard to battle back from this to regain full fitness.
“He’s a popular figure not just in the dressing room but with club staff and supporters so we are thrilled to keep him on board this season.’’
Stoke have also ap- pointed John Coates, son of chairman Peter, as vice-chairman because Keith Humphreys is step- ping down from his role on the board of directors.
“John and I have run the club together since bet365 purchased the club in 2006 and his ap- pointment as vice-chair- man serves to formalise his involvement,’’ said Peter Coates.
